In a vibrant celebration of art and creativity, our class embarked on a journey inspired by the iconic works of Niki de Saint Phalle. Through the study of her bold and expressive sculptures, we discovered the power of imagination and innovation.
Guided by our newfound inspiration, we immersed ourselves in hands-on sculpture using Mod Rock. With each twist and turn, we transformed our visions into three-dimensional masterpieces, channeling Saint Phalle's spirit of whimsy and joy.
During this art topic, we learnt the difference between warm and cool colours, learnt about primary and secondary colours, mixed colours, gave our opinions on works of art and developed our 3D and sculpture skills.
Recently, our Year 1 class embarked on an exciting journey to The Box in Plymouth, where art and science converged to inspire young minds. Our visit began with an engaging art workshop centered around plankton, the tiny organisms that play a vital role in our oceans' ecosystems.
Guided by skilled instructors, the students delved into the world of plankton through hands-on activities and creative exploration. From observing intricate plankton sculptures to crafting their own interpretations, the workshop sparked curiosity and imagination.
St Cleer School joined book lovers all over the country to dress up as their favourite literary character. From Alice in Wonderland to Harry Potter, the children and adults embraced their imagination and transformed into fantastic characters for the day. We enjoyed a delightful activity decorating 'book character potatoes', using markers, feathers, pipe cleaners and various craft supplies. World Book Day wasn't just for the children; it was a great opportunity for families to get together through the joy of reading. Parents, carers and children enjoyed sharing books and even wrote book reviews to share with the class!
The year 1's have been working hard on our food unit of work where he have learnt about different fruits and vegetables. We enjoyed tasting and comparing the different fruits, identifying where plants grow and which parts we eat. First, we designed our fruit kebab, next we learnt how to use knifes carefully to cut our fruit and make our kebab. Finally, we evaluated them and thought about how we could improve them.
We have been developing our skills using sketching pencils and charcoal. We explored using different grades of pencils and created a range of mark making; including hatching, blending and stippling. Have a look at our observational drawings and our work comparing the artist Van Gogh and Giuseppe Archimboldo. We used the iPads in art to make our own work in the style of Giuseppe Archimboldo.
What a great day we had making pizza’s at Pizza Express. To support our DT work on food and our recounts/sequencing in English we got the coach to Plymouth for a fun day of cooking. After we made our pizza’s, we walked up onto Plymouth Hoe for a pizza picnic and parachute games in the sunshine. Have a look at some of our pictures:
Have
a look at us learning about plants. This half term we are learning that seeds
grow into plants and identifying different parts of a plant. We will be identifying
and naming some common garden and wild plants and learn about evergreen and deciduous
trees. We will also record the growth of a plant. In these pictures, we are
planting different seeds and will watch them grow. We have planted cress seeds
and beans.
Below you will find an attachment for this terms KIRFS for Reception and Year 1. KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) are designed to support the development of the mental skills that underpin much of the maths work in school.
An
important part of maths development has always been rote learning of certain
maths facts. Each half term children will be assessed on Key Instant Recall
Facts (KIRFs) that will be taught in school but also need to be practised at
home as well.
It
is important that they know these facts thoroughly and can recall them
instantly. Whilst children have a wide range of abilities in mathematics, the
KIRFs are designed to be a set of facts that need to be learnt thoroughly as
they build on each other - year on year. Again, we stress that the children
must aim to know their KIRFs inside out, back to front and with instant recall.
Your help at home engaging with your children in
the learning of their KIRFs and using fun and practical ways to do this is so beneficial.
Thank you for your support.

Reception children will be focusing on the book 'Aliens Love Underpants' and will be learning about what planet we live on, what the moon is like, what astronauts do and so much more! We look forward to learning through play in our space rocket too!

discussing and comparing his work. The children have learnt all about abstract
art and different types of printing. We have explored and applied a range of
printing techniques including; printing with different objects, impressed
images, relief printing and block printing. We have developed our skills and
experimented with layering marks by
overprinting, repeating
a print to make a pattern and applying line and shape to our work. Have a look
at some of our printing techniques and work inspired by Patrick Heron.
