The children have been learning about Greek cuisine this week, finding out that olive oil, wheat and wine are food staples in Greece.
The week started with the children putting their taste buds to the test with a Greek taster session including: tzatziki, kalamata olives, pitta, feta, humous, sun dried tomatoes and dalmades (vine leaves). We were very impressed with how the children challenged themselves and tried thing that were new to them.
They then used cucumbers )a key ingredient in Greek salads) to practise using graters and peelers as well as different knife skills.
After considering which ingredients they had enjoyed tasting and would like to try again, the children designed stuffed Greek flat breads and a Greek salad.
They worked hard across the day today to prepare a Greek-inspired picnic. Using the skills learnt earlier in the week, they chopped ingredients for their Greek salads; measured, mixed and kneaded their ingredients for the dough; and stuffed their flat breads ready for baking.
This afternoon, both classes came together to sample their products-it is safe to say that the flat breads were a huge success!

Welcome back to the summer term. We hope you all had a restful break and enjoyed some sunshine.
This half term is a short but busy one! We have the Year 6 assessments in the coming weeks and Year 5 are continuing the project with STERTs. The Year 6 children also have their walk and BBQ to look forward to Friday 5th May. In addition, we are starting our new history topic- Ancient Greece and will be having some Greek taster sessions and making some Greek inspired food as well as writing biographies about Greek gods/goddesses in English.
This half term, PE will continue to be on a Thursday so please ensure children are in full PE kit appropriate for outdoor PE. The Year 5 children will also need their PE kits on Tuesday for STERTs and Wednesdays for Coach James sessions.
The Year 6 SATs club will continue to run for the 3 Mondays (the last one will be on Monday 4th May). If your child would like any additional support with preparations for SATs, please do get in touch.
Below you will find the over view for this half term and the KIRFs for the children to practise at home. In addition, children should regularly be logging in to Reading Eggs, TTRS and reading their school reading books.
Please continue to get in touch if you have any questions relating to your child's learning.
We look forward to a successful summer term.
The Year 5/6 Team.
